About us

Downright Canadian is a non-profit society registered with the Province of Alberta and a registered charitable organization with Revenue Canada.As a young peoples’ theatre we are dedicated to educating youth about the ins and outs of theatre.From performing to backstage work,it is our goal to expose local youth to plays, new and produced,by Canadian and Alberta artists.

Our Staff:

Gaylene Manuel (Artistic Director/Publicist): Gaylene has been with DCTC for the past five years. She has been involved with both the production and performance sides of theatre on and off for the past 16 years. She is a graduate of the Professional Writing Certificate Program at Mount Royal College and attended Grant McEwan in their Theatre Production program. Gaylene began playwrighting in high school and produced her first play, The Mountain Who Loved a Bird, at the Edmonton Fringe Festival in 1991. Her play, Vassilisa, was just produced by DCTC in their fall 2004 production. Gaylene has been a member of the board of directors for the Alberta Playwrights’ Network for the past six years and has held several positions including: President, Past President, and Director at Large. Gaylene loves her work with DCTC and with young people. Being a former 4-H member, she know the value youth organizations have on kids, parents, and society. Gaylene is grateful she is able to give what others once gave to her.

Nicole Zilla (Drama Instructor/Director): Nicole is delighted to be working with DCTC for her fourth season. She directed last summer’s production of We Are Beautiful, and previous works Mouse and Beware the Quickly Who. Along with teaching, dancing, and directing, Nicole has been acting for 15 years. She is a graduate of Mount Royal College Theatre Program where she received her Diploma of Fine Arts. In her time time away from teaching, she runs Soul Inspirations, her interior decoration and professional organizing company. Nicole’s proudest accomplishments and greatest passion is the work she does with children. It is a privilege for her to see youth discover their own creativity and make their dreams come alive!

Our Beginnings:

The Downright Canadian Theatre Company established in 1997 producing a numerous amount of plays by Canadian playwrights and performed solely by Alberta talent. Among those were: Scrubbers by Cenarth Fox ,Johnny Canuck: Letters from the Front by WD Graham,A Fall from Grace by WD Graham , The Trail of Lizzie Borden by Donna Tunney , Clever as Paint by Kim Morrissey, The Fighting Days by Wendy Lill , Hosanna by Michel Tremblay and The Birth Of Casper G. Schmidt by Sky Gilbert.
